A cloth mask is essentially a facial mask designed from common fabrics, typically cotton, usually vinyl. When comfortable, lightweight masks are often available. The cloth used for a cloth mask has either a face-framing material or a chinstrap fastened at the sides. When face framing is desired, one side may be blank, while the other contains a fabric pattern resembling a smiley face. When physical distancing is possible and when available, cloth masks may be taken off to allow for greater facial mobility. Some cloth masks have removable features such as Velcro straps, so these masks can be worn as a full face mask.
A number of different functions:
There are a number of different functions to the fabric mask. Some simple cloth masks serve only to keep the wearer’s nose clean. The nose may be clamped in place with the fingers or with a device such as a chin strap. Once cleaned, the cloth mask may be slipped over the nose, secured by Velcro, and left to dry overnight. Once this job is complete, the cloth mask may be worn for another day or two and then cleaned once again, air-drying thoroughly before putting it on again.
Cloth masks with air-drying pads:
Cloth masks with air-drying pads are useful when a patient is suffering from an acute respiratory infection, or when the patient must breathe through a mouth. To begin, place the air-dry pad against the patient’s mouth, keeping in mind that it should cover the maxillary area, where the nose meets the face. The pad should be slightly smaller than the patient’s nose, as this prevents too much air from entering the nasal cavity. If a small amount of air enters, bacteria could be spread into the oral cavity, causing another problem: chronic bacterial infections.
For severe respiratory infection:
Hospital-grade drops containing chlorhexidine and other strong germ killers can be used instead. These may be combined with specially designed cloth masks for home use. There are two main types of masks in this category, and the one you choose should depend on how you plan to use the device. The first type, which is the most commonly used, consists of a pair of filtration openings, or covid-19 filters, securely held in place by Velcro. To clean the unit, simply remove the mask, wash it with antibacterial soap and water, and replace it.
Second type:
The second type is slightly more complex, consisting of a pair of delta variants. These filters are more advanced than the covid-19 units, and their design includes additional features such as a nose-held reservoir for nasal medication, a chin-fitted mouthpiece, and a high-end air purifier. To clean the units, just remove the mask and wash it with tap water and mild soap. Wipe it down and leave to dry. To replace the units, simply slip into their corresponding holders and slip into the required receptacle for wearing.
Final type:
The final type is made from specially designed fabric, which may be washed and dried as normal. The cloth mask should be wrung out and left to dry before the replacement of the Velcro seals. Cloth masks for the ears are especially easy to wash because all you have to do is insert the ear loops and pull them snugly into the ear loops on the face, ensuring that the cloth mask is held in place securely at all times.
The benefit of using cloth masks:
The benefit of using cloth masks for protecting the face is clear, but how do you ensure that they are effective during emergencies? Cloth masks that offer ear protection are especially useful during the dust, chemical, and fire emergencies. According to a study by the American Society for Preventive Medicine, healthcare workers who wore randomly controlled masks that contained anti-fog fluid experienced a five percent reduction in eye infections. The same study showed a similar reduction in the occurrence of upper respiratory tract infection (or rhinitis) among healthcare workers who wore cloth masks. The results of these studies were published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Medical Associations. The study authors were very impressed by the efficacy of these anti-fog fluid cloth masks: “The consistent results demonstrate the importance of minimizing the threat of microbial contamination, particularly in the workplace.”
Conclusion:
One of the main reasons why healthcare workers should use cloth masks is because it is easy to remove if needed. For example, if a healthcare worker becomes infected with virus-like anthrax, a simple hand washing is sufficient to remove the virus before it causes serious health complications. But when a cloth mask becomes contaminated, instead of just washing the area with soap and water, which could be time-consuming and inconvenient, it is more efficient to use disposable plastic masks that have been specially made to remove contaminated dust and hair. And when a cloth mask that has been contaminated is pulled off, it should not be replaced on another person. The material of the disposable mask is easily washed with water, or the healthcare worker can simply throw it away. Therefore, it is smart for healthcare workers to invest in disposable cloth masks rather than ones made from more expensive materials.
