Generally speaking, working as a security officer in Canada usually requires passing a security check test, completing a security screening test, and then serving as a security officer for a year. The procedure for acquiring a security officer license varies slightly according to the Canadian provinces. In British Columbia, for example, the applicant must be at least 18 years of age, holding a high school diploma, and passing the tests for police officers, fire wardens, and integrity officers. A high school diploma is an essential prerequisite in some provinces, especially for security officers working in rural areas. Security officers in Ontario also have to be at least eighteen years old, holding a university degree and the relevant test for security and ambulance services.
In addition, applicants must complete a two-year course in criminal justice administration from a recognized Security Training School or Security Guard Training School. The Security License Board will decide if the Security Guard has satisfactorily completed the Security Management Course. For security guards who are still learning their trade, they need to complete a one-year course in criminal justice administration from any of the Canadian education institutes that offer Security Guard training courses. Applicants can also opt for a one-year post-high school Security License Program, which is not as extensive but can be helpful in gaining work experience for the Security License.
After successfully passing the security licensing exam, security guards in Canada can apply for jobs in government agencies, corporations, hospitals, schools, community organizations, private firms, security firms, and private individuals. Security guards are hired to provide 24-hour guarding and monitoring services at strategic locations. However, all applicants must first complete their police certificate and criminal record check. This is necessary to ensure that the applicant is trustworthy, a fit candidate for security guards and has no past criminal record that would require him/her to be excluded from security guardship due to crime. The applicant must also pass a psychological evaluation and drug test.
Security licenses are granted by the Security Management Branch of the Ministry of Public Safety and Security (MPPSS) and the Canadian Security Intelligence Association (CISAA). Security licensees in Canada are required to take and pass a security officer test that assesses an applicant’s knowledge, skills, and abilities in the field of security and criminal law. Applicants can choose to take the test online or on the job. For applicants who already have security guard certificates, it is recommended that they take the test as soon as possible because time is a very important factor. Answering questions accurately is one of the main requirements for a security license so applicants must make sure that they get their test right the first time.
Security licensees must meet a number of standard employment criteria that include knowledge and skills on state security matters. Security guard training includes subjects such as burglary, trespass, surveillance, vehicle and property hazards, first aid, emergency procedures, and use of high technology devices and tools. To be eligible for security guard training, an applicant must be at least 21 years old and the Canadian Security Intelligence Association has specific requirements that must be met. For all security guards in Canada, height and weight requirements are specific and should be carefully reviewed.
As a security officer, the applicant will need to undergo extensive training and experience as part of the licensing process. Security officers must also undergo rigorous background checks that include checking for criminal records, work history, a character references from former employers. Security officers are required to have a professional liability insurance plan that covers any accidents that may occur while on duty as well as any other injuries that may occur during employment. Security officers are subject to ongoing evaluation and examinations to ensure that they are up to date on the latest trends in the industry.
In order to be properly trained and certified as a security officer, security officers must complete a minimum of six months of the job training. Security officers must also complete a refresher course every year. Security officers can complete their training in their assigned field or by enrolling in a security officer education program offered through community colleges or vocational schools. Security officer education programs provide students with the knowledge and experience they need to become highly competent security officers. Security officer test scores are required to ensure that security officers meet required licensing standards.
Community colleges that offer security officer training courses usually charge a one-time fee that is typically nominal compared to the cost of the courses. Online courses are also available and there are training centers that offer comprehensive online security officer training. Security officer test scores can be achieved in as little as eight weeks, but it takes many years of professional experience to achieve a CSCS (Security Management Professional) certificate. Security officers are specially trained professionals and are integral members of our communities, so it is important that we hire the very best security officers to protect our nation and prevent security threats.
