For every vehicle, safety is an important concern, so the Ministry of Transport (MOT) test has been constructed. The test determines how safe your vehicle is to drive, and if your vehicle fails the test, it isn’t allowed to be driven

The test considers the four important aspects of a vehicle: suspension, brakes, steering and tyres. If you have failed the test, you’ll have to wait for 3-4 years to take it again. So, you must take all the precautions to not fail the test. Below we have made a list of things you should check before going for MOT.

List of things checked during MOT

The test makes sure all of the things that determine the safety of your vehicle are working properly. You may find many of these parts insignificant; however, it is not so. Below is a list of all the things that are checked during MOT Milton Keynes:

  • Registration plate
  • Mirrors
  • Lights
  • Vehicle structure
  • Doors
  • Wheels and tyres
  • Steering and brakes
  • Seat belts and the horn

Below are the things you should check and how you can do so.

Brake lights and indicators

You should first check your brake lights since they are quite essential to your vehicle’s safety. All you’ll need to do is park your car against a white wall. The back of your car should be facing the wall, and make sure there is some distance between the two. Then, you’ll need to step on the brake. Through your rearview mirror, you’ll be able to examine the reflection of your brake lights.

On the other hand, the process of examining your indicators is pretty easy. All you’ll need to do is switch your indicators as well as a headlight on. Then, see if the beam is working to its full strength or not. If it isn’t, you should get the bulb replaced.

Fuel and seat belts

The test also keeps a check over your fuel emission. Thus, the test will require enough fuel to do so. Make sure you’ve filled your fuel tank. So, it does not fail at the last minute. The other thing you should assess is your seatbelts. Make a note to examine all of your seatbelts.

Aside from these things, assess the movement of your seats as well. The passenger seat and the driver seat should be able to move front and back easily. There shouldn’t be any restriction or tightness in movement.

Horn and suspension

Your horn’s functionality affects your vehicle’s safety greatly as your horn is responsible for alerting passersby. Thus, you should check your horn by pressing it. You will be able to tell if the sound is a bit off. Also, it is recommended you do so in the afternoon as to not disturb your neighbours.

Suspension, on the other hand, is as important as your horn. To check your suspension, all you’d need to do is press down on the front wing of your car and do this for each side. If your vehicle starts jumping or bouncing up and down, you should consult a professional.

Number plate and wipers

Many people forget to check their number plate before going for the MOT Milton Keynes. So, make sure you check your number plate. It should be correct and visible. Foggy plates aren’t tolerated during the MOT test as they help to identify your vehicle.

On the other hand, wipers are essential as they make sure your vision is clear. They remove snow, dust, water or any other debris that might be there on your glass. Make sure your wipes are working fully. If not, buy new ones or get them repaired.

That was all! Now you know what things to check for before you go for the MOT test. Also, make sure you keep an eye on tread depth!
