This will save you from using the wrong thread gauge for testing the accuracy of the threaded components. If the thread gauges are misplaced in the wrong covers, then the one using it may not be aware of this but will try to get exert force while using the thread gauge. This will result in thread gauge damage. As you could see, you must first have a clear usage protocol and storage protocol. When using the thread gauges should be checked for the markings so that you ensure that you are using the right sized thread gauge for testing.

While storing the thread gauges should always go in their respective protective covers and while replacing the markings should be double checked. The lubricants, bur and other particles sticking to the thread gauge should be cleaned using soft cloth before storing. Presence of lubricants will result in surface corrosion. Presence of bur and other metal particles will increase friction while usage which in turn could damage the surface of the thread gauge or the threaded component.
