The Statue of Unity was made to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was a leader and activist for independent India. He is also called the iron man of India. He was a barrister by profession. He did great work by uniting 527 princely states of India. On 31 October 2018 to pay tribute to the great leader, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the statue at the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. It is located in Gujarat. The beautiful Narmada River surrounds the statue. He was the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India.   1. It is the world’s tallest statue: 

The approximate height of this statue is 182 meters or 597 feet. This statue has gained the attention of tourists from all over the world because of the height. This statue is made in bronze which gives it a majestic look. The dhoti-clad statue of Sardar Patel stands huge among the crowd and if seen from a distance the statue looks perfect as an icon of leadership. The cost spent on the building of the statue is 27 bn rupees.

 

  1. The Design was Chosen after a lot of studies

A team of historians and artists was held to select the design for the construction of the statue. Many artists submitted their designs but the final design was selected by Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar. Ram V Sutor is a Padma Shri awardee. He presented a design that fulfilled the requirements that a giant sculpture of a leader should have. The head that stood up showing dignity and grace. The legs have been put in such a way as in a walking position. The bronze casting was done in China after a3D design was finalized.

 

  1. Waste material was used

The funding in the construction was done by both the public and private sector. Although a huge amount was spent by the Gujarat government, one of the facts remains that the farmers contributed to the construction by submitting their used tools. These tools were used in the construction of the statue.

 

  1. Visitors can go up to 500 feet

Visitors can move up to the chest of the statue that is 500 feet high. This is called the viewing gallery where from they can view the amazing scenario of surroundings including the Sarovar Dam. It is surrounded by grills. Height lovers can find this an outstanding place to move to. The rear side of the statue is covered with glass.

 

  1. Huge labour included

Around 2000 labourers were hired in the construction. Many workers from China were also brought for the construction. Around 250 engineers were employed to construct the huge statue. A lot of workers, material and money were spent to build a vast statue that the whole world would notice. Around 70,000 tonnes of concrete and cement was used in the construction.
